Book review: Seriously…I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres

This book was exactly what I wanted for a warm summer day: light and funny! And it was also perfect for the 24in48 readathon weekend where you kinda want something that’s quick to read so you can meet your goals. 🙂 Not that I take challenges seriously or anything…

If someone ever says you’re weird, say thank you. And then curtsy. No, don’t curtsy. That might be too weird. Bow. And tip your imaginary hat. That’ll show them.

And no, didn’t make it to 24 hours of reading with the readathon. But I did finish two books and read for roughly 13 hours during the weekend. Not bad at all!

Seriously…I’m Kidding is a very funny book by none other than Ellen DeGeneres herself. 🙂 If you like Ellen DeGeneres and her humor, then you will like this book. But don’t expect it to be a serious memoir with a detailed description Ellen’s whole life. The book is kinda like reading Ellen’s journal and having a discussion just randomly about anything and everything that had been going on when Ellen wrote this book.

The book has Ellen’s thoughts about life, career, entertainment business, relationships, just like you would expect. And then it also has coloring pictures, lists about doing lists, a romance short story and a whole page for a haiku and so on. 🙂 So yes, the book has pretty much everything and it varies from deeper thoughts to absolute fluff. This might irritate some readers, I would guess, but for me it worked. In the midst of my vacation, having many laughs with Ellen was exactly what I wanted from this summer read.

I’ve always admired Ellen’s sincere personality (check out the recent interview with her by David Letterman on Netflix) and the warmth her presence seems to radiate. To me she is funny and kind and not afraid to put it all out there whether in the form of being goofy or very vulnerable. I admire that ability to be openly who you are and not care about what others think about you. She sets a great example of accepting who she is and being emphatic to others. We would be lucky to have more role models like Ellen who encourage us to do what makes us happy, care for one another, stay true to ourselves and laugh until we cry (or cry until we laugh).

I hope Ellen’s career will keep her warm and witty humor with us for a long long time.

Seriously…I’m Kidding takes its place in the Reading Challenge and it fills the prompt of:

21. A book written by a celebrity

So many celebrity books are written by someone else so it was nice to find Ellen’s book that is clearly her own work. 🙂

I love books, games and the coziness of our house (currently it's the kingdom of me and my husband). My work in a game studio as a Senior HR Specialist keeps me busy and social, but I am an introvert in my core. Navigating life between my very social work and my introvert, less social personality can be tricky and it goes hand in hand with my interest in overall personal well-being.
